Who provides Akuru
Akuru is provided by Damith Rushika Kothalawala. For privacy questions or support, email admin@drklk.org.
This policy covers Akuru for macOS and this project website. It describes the App Store edition and identifies the additional behavior of the direct-download edition.
Akuru is available from the Mac App Store and the Akuru homepage. Store version 2.1.1 works entirely offline. The planned Store 2.2.0 update restores the online catalog and font downloads described below; those connections also apply to the direct-download edition.
Text and preferences on your Mac
Akuru saves your custom preview text and favourite font choices in local app preferences. It keeps downloaded fonts, installation records, the font catalog and the Wikipedia specimen locally so they can be reused. Search filtering and text rendering take place on your Mac.
The app’s catalog, font and specimen requests do not include your custom text or favourites. Akuru reads available font names to show installation status. The reviewed request code does not send that font inventory to a server.
Choosing Copy preview text writes the selected preview text to the macOS clipboard. Clipboard access and any clipboard-sharing settings on your Mac are controlled by macOS and the other apps you use.
When Akuru connects to the internet
| Feature | Destination and purpose |
|---|---|
| Font catalog | GitHub Pages at damithkothalawala.github.io. Akuru checks for an updated catalog when it opens online and when you choose to refresh it. |
| Prepared previews | Planned Store 2.2.0: GitHub Pages at damithkothalawala.github.io. The app retrieves a prepared preview index with catalog checks and downloads missing card or article images when needed. Images are verified and cached. This does not send your preview text or download a font file. |
| Font files | The source URL recorded for the selected font. A file may be fetched when you install it or need it to render custom text or characters. The current catalog uses GitHub’s raw-content service, ICTA, FreeTypo and Pitaka. A request identifies the requested font file. |
| Wikipedia specimen | Direct edition only: si.wikipedia.org when the specimen is refreshed. The request asks for the fixed සකස්කඩ article, not your custom text. An incomplete bundled specimen can also trigger a refresh on launch. |
| Links you open | Direct edition only: your browser opens the chosen font source, licence, contributor reference or other linked page. The destination receives a normal browser request and applies its own privacy practices. |
Network services receive connection information such as your IP address, the requested URL and the request time. Akuru sends an app-identifying User-Agent; catalog and font requests include its version. GitHub Pages logs and stores visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes, whether or not they are signed in to GitHub; see its data collection documentation. Other hosting services handle request metadata under their own policies. Their retention periods and whether they link request metadata to other data have not been verified for this policy. Akuru does not operate or control those providers’ infrastructure, log retention or backup systems.
Requests use macOS networking services. Network caches and cookie handling also depend on those services and the destination; this policy does not promise that every request is cookie-free.
Differences between editions
App Store edition: the saved Wikipedia article and bundled Dasun’s keyboard files, icon, MIT licence and manual setup guide stay local. Source and support addresses are noninteractive attribution text. The planned Store 2.2.0 update adds catalog, prepared-preview and on-demand font downloads; included and cached files remain usable offline. It does not install the keyboard or check its GitHub project for updates. This edition also omits Akuru’s direct-download app updater. App Store delivery and account information are handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy.
Direct-download edition: Akuru checks its GitHub Pages app-update manifest. Its keyboard manager can check api.github.com and raw.githubusercontent.com for Dasun’s Wijesekara layout, icon and licence. Automatic keyboard checks are enabled by default and can be turned off in the keyboard section. Updates are applied when you choose them. Installed revision identifiers are used when comparing keyboard versions.
The Store edition keeps its managed font files and records in its app container and requests registration through macOS. The direct edition installs managed fonts in your account’s Fonts folder and managed keyboard files in your Keyboard Layouts folder.
Analytics and third-party services
A review of the current Akuru app code found no advertising SDK, analytics SDK, Akuru account login or automatic support-report upload. This does not describe all data handled by Apple, hosting providers, font sources, linked websites or your email provider.
The project website is served by GitHub Pages. Its pages do not include an analytics script or an email collection form. GitHub describes its handling of service and website request information in the GitHub Privacy Statement. Wikipedia requests are covered by the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy. Other font-source and linked-site policies apply when you contact those services.
Support email
If you email admin@drklk.org, the developer receives the email address, message and attachments you choose to send, together with normal email metadata. That correspondence is used to respond to your question and follow up on the issue. Send only the details needed for support; remove private text, credentials and unrelated information from screenshots or logs.
Support correspondence is handled in an email mailbox, not an in-app account. The developer deletes support correspondence within 12 months of resolving the issue, or earlier on your request, unless retention is legally required. Contact the same address to ask about retained correspondence or request correction or deletion. This policy does not promise deletion from a provider’s backups on a particular schedule.
Your choices
- You can edit or clear custom text and change favourites in the app.
- You choose which fonts to download or install. Bundled previews and saved content can be browsed offline.
- Use Akuru’s removal controls for its managed fonts before deleting their files. Removing a font’s files directly can leave a macOS registration that needs attention.
- In the direct edition, turn off automatic keyboard checks in the keyboard section if you do not want those checks.
- Contact support for help clearing Akuru’s local preferences, cached data or installation records. Deleting the application alone is not a promise that macOS removes all of those files.
Changes and questions
The date at the top identifies this policy version. Changes to app behavior or service providers may require an updated policy. For questions about this policy or information you have sent to support, contact admin@drklk.org.
